Early April snow comes with some cold spring temperatures.

For this time of the year, the air coming down from Canada is pretty cold.

Afternoon highs will only reach the upper 20s to mid-30s on Thursday. Most of the temperatures on Friday will start in the teens and only make it to the 20s for the highs. It may be the coldest April 6 on record for some of the area, including Billings.

With moisture streaming over the cold air, light snow will fall Thursday, and increase Thursday night. The sun is getting higher in the sky, and filtered afternoon sun could keep the roads wet and slushy.

By this evening, that could result in icy conditions for your commute home.

The best snowmaking weather is overnight. The mountains west of Billings could see a foot or more of snow; perhaps 3 to 6 inches around Billings; with accumulations much lower east of Billings.

Temperatures will run 20 to 30 degrees colder than average Thursday night and Friday as the snow ends.

Temperatures will warm over the weekend. Highs will reach 35 to 45 Saturday, the 40s Sunday and Monday, and maybe some low 50s Tuesday and Wednesday.

Rain/snow mix is likely Saturday night.

Billings forecast:

Thursday…Snow showers could leave an inch or two in the grassy areas. High near 30.

Thursday night…3 to 5 inches of new snow. About 14 for the low.

Friday…Only around 24 for the high. Snow ends with a little afternoon clearing.
