The groundhog appears to be right

Punxsutawney Phil saw his shadow this Groundhog Day. His prediction of 6 more weeks of winter arrives this weekend.

There will be a clear dividing line between colder air east of Billings, and warmer air from Billings to the west on Friday. High temperatures will range from the teens closer to the Dakotas to the mid-40s in the mountain foothills.

Expect a mix of clouds and sun with area snow and rain showers during the day and into the evening. Gusty winds will blow 40 to 50 mph area Livingston.

Saturday, temperatures will be mild in the morning, but drop sharply in the afternoon around Billings. Snow showers will follow, and much of the area will see 3”-6” of new snow on the ground by Sunday.

Another round of snow hits us Sunday night through Monday.

The heaviest snow will be on the dividing line between the warm and cold air. Right now, Billings appears to be right on that line.

Billings forecast:

Friday: A chance of snow in the morning, then a chance of rain. Mostly cloudy to cloudy, with a high near 42. Southwest wind 10 to 15 mph. Chance of precipitation is 40%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Friday Night: Snow and rain likely, mainly before midnight. Mostly cloudy, with a low around 29. West wind 10 to 20 mph. Chance of precipitation is 60%. New snow accumulation of less than a half inch possible.

Saturday: Snow, mainly after noon. Temperature rising to near 38 by 10am, then falling to around 20 during the remainder of the day. West wind 8 to 10 mph becoming north in the afternoon. Chance of precipitation is 80%. New snow accumulation of around 2 inches.
