Snow and cold return to the region. Hazardous travel is likely.

Overnight rain showers become snow as cold air surges down from the north throughout the day. This could cause areas of ice to form with snow over the top for very slick conditions.

Yellowstone County and the surrounding counties are under a Winter Storm Warning. Widespread accumulations of 4 to 6 inches of new snow with 6 to 10 inches into the higher elevations is expected. Around the rest of southern Montana northern Wyoming, expecting 1 to 5 inches of snow.

Temperatures will hold steady or drop through the rest of the day. Snow showers will and during the afternoon and evening, and with some clearing overnight temperatures will be very cold in the morning.

Expect morning readings Thursday to start in the single digits above and below zero with a additional wind chill values.

A break in the snow is expected Thursday, but another round of snow showers will develop Thursday night through Friday with additional accumulations.

Wednesday… Snow decreasing through the afternoon. Temperatures also decreasing through the afternoon. Easterly wind 5 to 15 miles an hour.

Wednesday night… Mostly cloudy with a slight chance of snow. A low around one above. Wind chill values as low as -15.

Thursday… Partly to mostly cloudy with a high in the upper teens to around 20. A slight chance of snow showers in the afternoon with a better chance Thursday night and Friday.
