Click for 7 Day ForecastOur much advertised winter storm is kicking in, with the effects changing day by day. We will go from significant snow, to dangerously cold, to gusty winds through the next several days.
Snow is likely Thursday, Thursday night, and Friday. With cold air in place and warm moist air overrunning aloft, a lot of light fluffy snow could stack up. Snow totals of 8 to 12 inches in the lower elevations from Billings to the West through Friday evening are certainly possible.
The snow will slowly move from West to East across the region. Some of the more intense snowfall could be Thursday night into Friday around the Billings area.
Bitter cold air starts to drop into the region Friday, temperatures in the morning in the single digits above zero likely the warmest of the day. Readings in the teens to even 20s below zero are possible across southern Montana and northern Wyoming early Saturday.
As warmer air nudges in Sunday, winds increase causing areas of blowing snow to perhaps even whiteout conditions, and bitter cold wind chills.
Billings forecast:
Thursday… Snow. New accumulations around 3 inches. High near 50.
Thursday night… Another 2 to 4 inches of snow. About 2 for low.
Friday… Another 2 to 4 inches of snow. Cold, with temperatures in the morning at around 4° possibly the warmest day. Wind chill values could be as cold as -20.
