Cool and damp week ahead

While the weekend storm system left Billings residents wanting for more, Miles City received its highest one day precipitation total on record. This sort of erratic pattern will continue, with cool temperatures and hit-and-miss rain and snow showers this week.

Miles City received 2.91 inches of moisture Sunday. The previous daily precipitation record was 2.71 inches on June 18, 1964. By contrast, the latest computer simulations show Billings would be lucky to receive a quarter inch of rain by Wednesday.

A cool and showery pattern continues this week with temperatures running 10 to 15° below average. Highs will be mainly in the 40s, and overnight lows mainly in the 30s.

Periods of snow can be expected in the mountain foothills this week, with some fairly significant accumulations possible in the mountains. The better chance of rain remains East of Billings for the next couple of days, but there are some indications Billings could pick up some showers especially late Tuesday through early Thursday.

On Thursday, a system to our South does bring some potential for more showers. But, the amount of moisture and timing are still very uncertain.

Billings forecast:

Today… Areas of patchy fog during the morning, otherwise cloudy to mostly cloudy with scattered showers. A high near 48.

Tonight… A slight chance of evening showers, with a better chance of rain or snow overnight. Otherwise cloudy to mostly cloudy with a low of about 36.

Tuesday… Rain and snow showers possible in the morning with a chance of rain in the afternoon. Patchy fog is possible in the morning. Cloudy to mostly cloudy, and around 47 for a high.
