Motor Vehicle Exam Stations Now Accept Credit, Debit Cards

The Motor Vehicle Services Division (MVD) at the Montana Department of Justice announced today customers at its exam stations will now be able to use credit and debit cards to pay for their in-person transactions.

The roll-out of the new payment option began a few weeks ago in Helena’s exam station as well as MVD’s Records and Driver Control Unit, which administers all driver license records and actions.  According to Motor Vehicle Division Administrator Sarah Garcia, credit/debit card payment availability should be offered statewide soon.  “We anticipate the public will be able to walk in to any of our exam stations and pay with their credit or debit cards by the end of August, ” Garcia said.  “We’re excited to be able to provide more flexible payment options for Montanans, as we continue to strive for excellence in customer service.”

Attorney General Tim Fox said, “This is one more way our department is improving the way we do business with an eye toward efficient and convenient service delivery for today’s customers.  I’m pleased with the initiative our Motor Vehicle Division has shown once again by focusing on improved functionality and productivity throughout its operations.”

MVD exam stations will continue to accept payment in the form of cash or check, in addition to debit cards and Master Card and Visa credit cards.  In 2015, MVD staff processed over 200,000 new and renewal driver licenses and ID cards for over one million Montanans at 49 offices across the state.

Last fall, MVD announced the availability of on-line appointment scheduling in an effort to enhance convenience for its customers.  Visit  www.dojmt.gov/driving

for details about required documentation, fees, and other important information needed before scheduling appointments, including written and road tests, converting an out-of-state license to Montana, license renewals, and completion of some types of driver education programs. Once an appointment has been made, an email or text message will be sent to confirm.  People who do not have computer or smart phone access can call the MVD Customer Service Center toll free at .
