Today's Social Climate

In today's social climate, being conscious of social issues and leading a happy life seem to be two impossible goals to achieve simultaneously. So many populations are marginalized, and even the feeling of having a good day at work seems a privilege so outrageous that it is not to be enjoyed, but instead something to feel guilty about. However, through personal observation and my own pursuit of happiness for myself and others, I have discovered a few ways to be socially conscious and also improve your own life.

1) Own Who you are, and allow others to do the same. Take pride in your heritage, sexuality, race, religion, favorite drink at Starbucks, etc., and recognize the beauty in the differences between you and others around you. Celebrate the diversity, don't be blind to it. Especially if you are lucky enough to be reading this in America, remember that that's what this country is all about, and we are all so lucky to be here.

2) Do something nice for someone every day. It's a cliche. I know. But if you make an effort to do something nice, as simple as giving a genuine compliment or giving up your cab to the person next to you who has been trying to catch one, it will enrich your life and the quality of your spirit by a whole lot. Bonus points if once or twice a week, the person you do something nice for is you.

3) Remember that it takes 21 days to establish a habit, but only 15 before its no longer a struggle. If you can keep up a new routine (exercise, eating habit, a new work schedule, etc.) for 15 days, the remaining 6 days that it takes for the habit to take hold in your brain will be an absolute breeze, and you'll be settled in your new and improved ways for months before you realize the 21 days have gone by!!

4) Listen to music that has no lyrics. This one might be a challenge if music doesn't have a large presence in your life, but music is one of life's purest art forms. It's a proven fact that music with lyrics takes up a certain part of our brain space that prevents total relaxation and rest, because hearing the singing preoccupies our minds. But hearing instrumental music brings the same joys while allowing us to take in the world around us, take stock of how we are feeling, and enjoy life's little moments.

Although some of these tips might sound odd, participating in them fully will allow you to enjoy the days of your life and be a positive force in the universe for yourself and those around you, and that's what matters; leaving this world a better place because you are in it
